How to Tell Real Pearls from Fake: The 3-Second Test

Real vs. Fake Pearls: The Ultimate Gemologist Guide

Whether they are cultivated in the ocean (Saltwater pearls) or in a lake (Freshwater pearls), real pearls are magnificent organic gemstones born from a living mollusk. However, the market is flooded with imitations. Terms like “Swarovski pearls,” “crystal pearls,” “shell pearls,” or “glass pearls” might sound fancy, but scientifically, they are simply man-made beads coated with plastic or glass.

So, how can you tell if the pearls you are buying or the ones sitting in your jewelry box are genuine?

As a gemologist, I am going to share a foolproof, 3-second test you can do at home. You don’t need any special equipment, and you won’t damage your precious jewelry. It all comes down to the science of the pearl.

Real vs. Fake Pearls

The Science: It’s All About the Nacre

To understand the test, you must understand how a real pearl is built. Unlike imitation pearls that have a smooth, artificial coating, a real pearl is made of nacre (진주층).

Nacre is a unique biological structure consisting of thousands of microscopic, brick-like layers of calcium carbonate (aragonite crystals) glued together by an organic protein called conchiolin. Even though a real pearl looks perfectly smooth to the naked eye, under a microscope, its surface actually resembles a rugged, terraced landscape.

Imitation pearls, on the other hand, have a completely flat, perfectly smooth artificial surface. We are going to use this microscopic difference to our advantage.

The “Pearl-to-Pearl” Rubbing Test

Here is the easiest way to authenticate a pearl.

What you need: You need just one piece of jewelry that you know is a 100% real pearl. It could be your mother’s Akoya pearl ring, a freshwater stud earring, or a South Sea pearl pendant. It doesn’t matter what type it is, as long as it is real.

The Steps:

  1. Hold the known real pearl in one hand.
  2. Hold the questionable pearl in your other hand.
  3. Very gently, rub the two pearls against each other. (Note: Use extremely light pressure! Do not press hard, as you do not want to crush the nacre.)

The Results:

  • If it is REAL: You will feel a distinct gritty, sandy friction (사각사각). This is the microscopic layers of nacre catching on each other.
  • If it is FAKE: They will glide past each other effortlessly. It will feel completely smooth and slippery (맨들맨들) because you are just rubbing two pieces of plastic or glass together.

Warning: Stop Using the “Tooth Test”!

You might have heard your grandmother say, “To see if a pearl is real, rub it against your front teeth!” While the scientific principle is exactly the same (feeling for that gritty texture), please do not do this. Human teeth are significantly harder than pearls on the Mohs hardness scale. If you rub a delicate, high-quality pearl against your tooth, you risk scratching the pearl’s surface and permanently ruining its luster.

Always use the “Pearl-to-Pearl” method instead. Because the two real pearls have the exact same hardness, gently rubbing them together will not cause any deep scratches.

How to Test a Full Pearl Strand (Necklace)

What if you have an old pearl necklace and want to know if the entire strand is real? You don’t even need a separate pearl for this.

Simply take two pearls from the same necklace (for example, the two pearls nearest the clasp) and gently rub them together. A jeweler would never mix real pearls and fake pearls on the exact same strand. If rubbing them together produces that signature gritty, sandy friction, congratulations you have a strand of genuine pearls!
