Not All Hanadama Pearls Are Equal: Insider Secrets You Need to Know

The Holy Grail of Akoya: What is a “Hanadama” Pearl?

Among pearl lovers and collectors, the term “Hanadama” (花珠) which translates to “Flower Pearl”—represents the absolute highest tier of Japanese Akoya pearls.

We recently sourced a breathtaking new batch of Hanadama Akoya strands, so I wanted to take this opportunity to break down exactly what this title means. In the jewelry industry, opinions on grading certificates can vary. However, I believe that a credible certificate acts as an excellent baseline guide for consumers as long as it comes from a highly respected, authoritative laboratory.

The Authority: The Pearl Science Laboratory (PSL) of Japan

When we talk about true Hanadama pearls, we are specifically referring to the certification issued by the Pearl Science Laboratory (PSL) in Japan.

To put it simply, the PSL is the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) of the pearl world. Since its founding in the 1970s, the PSL has been the undisputed global authority on pearl grading, developing advanced testing equipment and industry standards. (If you google “Hanadama,” you will quickly see their global reputation).

To earn the special title of “Aurora Hanadama” (オーロラ 花珠) on a PSL certificate, an Akoya pearl must meet incredibly strict criteria:

  • Size: Must be a white-body Akoya pearl measuring 6mm or larger.
  • Nacre Thickness: Must have a nacre thickness of at least 0.4mm.
  • Shape: Must fall within the strict “semi-round to perfect round” tolerance.
  • Surface/Blemishes: Must meet the PSL’s highest standards for a clean surface.
  • Aurora/Luster: The most critical factor. The pearl must exhibit superior light reflection and the distinct “Aurora” effect (strong interference colors) under the PSL’s specialized testing.

Statistical data shows that only about the top 10% of the entire Akoya harvest meets these rigorous requirements. When you see a Hanadama certificate, you are looking at verified, top-tier data.

The Gemologist’s Secret: Are All Hanadama Pearls Equal?

Absolutely not. Just because two necklaces both come with a Hanadama certificate does not mean they are identical in quality. Grading operates on a spectrum. One Hanadama strand might have a luster that barely passes the “very strong” threshold, while another boasts a breathtaking, mirror-like glow that is off the charts. The same applies to surface blemishes one might be nearly flawless, while another sits right on the edge of the acceptable limit.

This is exactly why I constantly tell my clients: Compare, compare, compare! Even in the wholesale market, two Akoya strands of the exact same size, both holding Hanadama certificates, can have a wholesale price difference of hundreds of dollars based on their actual visual quality.

The Paradox: Can an Uncertified Pearl Be More Expensive Than a Hanadama?

Yes! It happens frequently.

Imagine an Akoya pearl with out-of-this-world luster and beautiful color, but it has one tiny natural blemish that disqualifies it from receiving the Hanadama title. Because its luster is so superior, its actual market value can be higher than a certified Hanadama pearl with weaker luster.

However, explaining this nuance to a beginner buyer takes time and expertise. Because of this, many commercial sellers simply push Hanadama-certified pearls because the paper makes it an “easy sell.” While a certificate is a great tool, if you want the absolute best value and beauty, your eyes (and a trusted gemologist) are your best assets. Buy the pearl, not just the paper.

Our Exclusive Sourcing: 8-8.5mm & 8.5-9mm Hanadama Strands

I highly recommend the new Hanadama strands we just brought in. But my advice remains the same: don’t just blindly trust the paper. Compare the actual pearls.

When evaluating pearls through photos, look for the sharpness of the reflection. Photographing pearls is notoriously difficult (even professional photographers hate it!), and the color can shift depending on whether it’s 2 PM or 4 PM natural light. But one thing you can verify in a photo is the luster. Look at the close-up shots of our strands—can you see the sharp, distinct reflection of my camera and silhouette in the pearls? That sharp, mirror-like reflection is the ultimate proof of thick nacre and premium luster.
