Beyond Hanadama: Discovering the Rarest Baby Akoya Pearls, オーロラ彩凛珠 (Aurora Sairinju)
If you’re a pearl enthusiast, you’ve probably heard of the prestigious “Aurora Tennyo” (オーロラ天女). Known as the top 10% of the already elite Hanadama grade, it represents the absolute pinnacle of pearl quality.
In our last post, we explored the beauty of Hanadama pearls. Today, we’re stepping into an even more exclusive realm to introduce the top 10% of baby Akoya pearls: the “Aurora Sairinju” (オーロラ彩凛珠).

The Difference: 天女 (Tennyo) vs. 彩凛珠 (Sairinju)
Japan’s Pearl Science Laboratory uses specific names based on a pearl’s size to designate its highest grades. For those who know Hanadama, the quality speaks for itself. Here is the breakdown:
- Akoya pearls 6mm and larger: The highest grade is 天女 (Tennyo).
- Akoya pearls under 6mm: The highest grade is 彩凛珠 (Sairinju).
Simply put, the “Tennyo” title doesn’t exist for pearls under 6mm. The ultimate tier for baby Akoyas is exclusively called Sairinju.

Why You Probably Haven’t Heard of Sairinju
Even seasoned pearl lovers might find “Aurora Sairinju” an unfamiliar term. Why? Because it’s incredibly rare to find a wholesaler importing and distributing baby Akoya strands of this caliber.
The combination of tiny sizes and a premium price tag makes it a tough sell for standard wholesale. By bringing the 5-5.5mm baby Akoya Sairinju to the market, I’m taking a bit of a leap. Sometimes, showcasing pieces this high-end leads to the misconception that our shop is just “expensive.” But I don’t arbitrarily mark up prices—truly exceptional quality inherently commands a higher value.

Smaller Doesn’t Mean Cheaper: The Making of a Masterpiece
There is a common misconception that smaller pearls should cost less. However, a standard 16-inch (40-41cm) baby Akoya necklace requires roughly 78 individual 5-5.5mm pearls. That means 78 different oysters each produced a unique piece of natural art just to create a single strand.
Because pearls are crafted by nature and not cut by machines, absolutely flawless pearls are virtually nonexistent. You might spot a tiny natural blemish here or there. However, true value lies in the essence of the pearl its breathtaking luster. The radiance and color of the Sairinju grade are so intensely beautiful that any minor surface characteristics are completely eclipsed. A mesmerizing, deep glow will always outweigh a perfectly spherical but dull shape.

The Hunt for Ultimate Quality
Finding baby Akoya pearls under 6mm is hard enough; finding them in Sairinju quality is nearly impossible.
Recently, I traveled to Kobe for the pearl auctions, competing directly with high-end international buyers who only want the best. I spent the trip tracking down this specific batch and literally bought out everything they had. It will likely be a long time before another batch like this hits the market—not just for me, but for anyone in the industry.

See the Radiance for Yourself
Words and photos hardly do these pearls justice. Forget what you know about Hanadama; Sairinju quality is on an entirely different level.
