How It’s Made: Hand-Crafting a 4mm ‘Baby Akoya’ Pearl Strand

– The Process of Crafting a Pearl Necklace

I crafted this piece specifically for a fellow jeweler (client) who urgently needed high-quality 4mm saltwater pearls.

n

Recently, another client came in and swept our entire inventory of pearls under 6mm… so we were left with absolutely nothing in that size range.

n

[So, I decided to build the 4mm strand myself.]

1. First, I sift through my collection of loose pearls to cull (select) the ones that have the potential to become a necklace.

2. Next, I sort them by body color.

3. Since color and luster can shift depending on the drilling angle (orientation), I have to carefully align them to match. (Creating a 4-4.5mm strand requires 98 to 99 individual pearls, so matching the luster and tone perfectly is incredibly tricky.)

4. I arrange them on a layout board. This is where I check for any “odd ones out.” If a pearl’s color clashes with the rest, I swap it out to ensure uniformity.

5. Once the color matching is done, I sort them again by size. Since the pearls range from 4.0mm to 4.49mm, the graduation must be precise. If they aren’t arranged in perfect order—even a 0.2~0.3mm difference—the necklace will look messy and uneven.

6. I place them back on the board in their strict size order for a final inspection. This layout represents the final product, so I have to be critical. If a dull pearl is hiding among high-luster ones, it drags down the value of the entire strand.

7. Finally, it’s time to drill. I have to drill all 98-99 pearls by hand. Since 4mm pearls are so tiny, they are really hard to grip. It’s tougher than it looks! Haha.

And just like that…

Here is the final assembled strand. It’s gorgeous, isn’t it? I think it looks even more radiant because I hand-crafted it myself. Haha.

“To the client who trusted me with this order—thank you. I am confident you will be 100% satisfied.”

n

That was a brief look into the process of making a pearl strand. Thank you!
